About BLEI
The British Columbia Black Advocacy Society (BCBAS) is a Black-led, community-driven organization committed to advancing the rights, dignity, and well-being of Black individuals and families across British Columbia.
Through its Black Legal Empowerment Initiative (BLEI), BCBAS is building a comprehensive, culturally informed legal support ecosystem that provides free legal advice, multilingual interpretation, and community legal education to Black residents of BC, particularly those facing barriers due to language, socioeconomic status, or unfamiliarity with the Canadian legal system.
How to be Part of BLEI?
The BCBAS BLEI is for Black individuals seeking legal support, legal volunteers who can help offer such support, and legal researchers who can produce legal guides to aide the support program.
Request FREE Legal Assistance
The BCBAS BLEI offers free legal assistance to Black individuals in B.C. who have low or no income and have experienced unfair treatment because they are Black.
Volunteer as a Legal Personnel
Are you a Black or non-Black qualified legal personnel in any province in Canada, who wants to contribute to providing legal advice and services to members of the Black community in B.C.?
Submit a Proposal for Legal Research
Through BLEI-RfP, BCBAS invites qualified legal researchers to submit proposals to conduct structured legal research and produce written legal guides on 13 specified areas of law as they apply in B.C.
Cultural and Intercultural Community-Building
Organize cultural events, facilitate intercultural exchange programs, and establish community centers to promote unity, understanding, and cultural expression among communities.
Capacity Building and Empowerment
Develop training programs, establish mentorship initiatives, and collaborate with businesses to empower black individuals and foster leadership and employment opportunities.
Collaborative Partnerships
Forge partnerships, engage in dialogue, and foster international collaborations to amplify collective impact and advance racial justice for black individuals.
